Call for Proposals – Anti-Oppression and Reproductive Justice Training

 1.  Background:

 Canadians for Choice (CFC) is a pro-choice, non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to ensuring reproductive choice for all Canadians. At CFC, we envision a world where individuals-regardless of age, ability, race, gender, sexual orientation, place of residence, or socio-economic and other status have access to the information, resources and services required to make and exercise informed choices on all aspects of their sexual and reproductive health and rights. For this reason, we work to ensure the general public, policy-makers and health and education practitioners are well educated and informed about all aspects of sexual and reproductive health and rights. We also aim to enhance the quality and comprehensiveness of research and information on current and emerging sexual and reproductive health issues.


Canadians for Choice supports and works towards preventing unwanted pregnancies, promoting contraception, educating women, men and youth, and ensuring that families have the necessary resources to raise healthy, happy children. We are committed to:

  • Educating and training health care professionals in the delivery of reproductive health care services
  • Educating the public on all aspects of reproductive health choices
  • Advancing and supporting ethical research into the social, legal, medical aspects of reproductive health
  • Researching, monitoring and analyzing reproductive health policy
  • Disseminating research about reproductive health to the general public and to healthcare professionals
  • Acting as a resource centre and database for sexual and reproductive health information and services Supporting and promoting reproductive health internationally

Canadians for Choice has decided to adopt a Reproductive Justice framework. As part of this process, the Board of Directors is planning a training workshop on Anti-Oppression and Reproductive Justice. This training is intended to strengthen the staff and Board members’ understanding of the Reproductive Justice framework and to find ways to apply it to the structure and programming of the organization.

 

CFC is pleased to invite proposals from individuals and groups interested in facilitating one all-day training workshop on Anti-Oppression and Reproductive Justice in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

 

2. Goals and Objectives: The goals and objectives of the Reproductive Justice training workshop are:

 

Goal

To strengthen the understanding of CFC’s Board members and staff of Reproductive Justice in order to work towards implementing a Reproductive Justice framework into the organization’s programming and strategic planning. In doing so, CFC hopes to improve and expand its capacity to effectively support access to sexual and reproductive health services and to advocate for sexual and reproductive rights.

 

In an effort foster greater solidarity amongst the Ottawa pro-choice and reproductive justice community, CFC will be offering limited participant spaces (6-12 spaces) to representatives from local community organizations and collectives. These participants will represent a broad cross section of sexual and reproduction rights advocates and activists. The total number of board, staff and community organization participants will be approximately 20 to 25 people.

 

Objectives

  1. To develop a thorough understanding of the core principles of Reproductive Justice.
  2. To train all CFC board members and staff on how to articulate the values of Reproductive Justice.
  3. To develop an understanding of issues of inclusiveness.
  4. To develop values and mission statements with a Reproductive Justice framework.
  5. To learn conflict resolution through a Reproductive Justice framework.
  6. To learn how to build coalitions through a Reproductive Justice framework.

 

3. Selection Process: 

  • Applicants should submit a proposal by Friday, December 23rd, 2011. Proposals will be reviewed in the following week.
  • The proposal selected for the training will be announced on Monday, January 9th, 2011.
  • The training session will take place on Saturday, January 28th, 2012 in Ottawa, Ontario.

 

4. Eligibility:

 CFC will choose one consultant who will be in charge of designing and facilitating one-day training on Anti-Oppression and Reproductive Justice, in collaboration with a small committee of CFC Board members and staff. The training will be held in Ottawa, Ontario.

 

The selected facilitator must:

  1. Be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive rights through either academic work, paid work or volunteer work, at the local, regional or international level.
  2. Be skilled and have experience in facilitation and training of Anti-Oppression and Reproductive Justice.
  3. Agree with the CFC Principles and Values.
  4. Be fluent in English.
  5. Be able to participate in one or more preparation teleconference meetings prior to training in order to assist with the development of training curricula.

 

5. Funds and Budget:

 

Canadians for Choice will cover the travel expenses of the selected facilitator including round-trip economy-class travel, per diems and accommodation. CFC will also provide a modest honorarium to the selected facilitator.

 

Please note that CFC is a small not-for-profit, charitable organization with limited financial means. This should be taken into consideration when outlining a proposed budget.

 

6. Requirements:

 Applicants are requested to submit a Proposal, including the following:

  1. A cover page with name, title and contact information of the facilitator
  2. A curriculum vitae of relevant experience
  3. A proposal not to exceed 3 pages in length, which addresses each of the following:

a)      A summary highlighting the person’s expertise related to anti-oppression training, reproductive justice and sexual and reproductive rights movements and advocacy; and

b)      General outline of the proposed training session; and

c)      Description of how the training meets the goals and objectives of the CFC; and

d)     Description of why you are the most appropriate person to carry out the proposed training; and

e)      Full budget requested to complete the training.

 

7. Submission:

 

The entire submission package must be received by Canadians for Choice no later than Friday, December 23rd, 2011 by 5:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time. Submissions by email or fax as well as postal mail will be accepted, provided they are all received by the deadline. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
